Eight-digit grid references specify the location to the nearest ten meters. This is done by using four digits for the easting and four digits for the northing, which breaks the map into 10 m by 10 m squares within the grid system. Each extra digit per axis tightens the box by a factor of ten, so moving from a four-digit reference (1 km square) to an eight-digit reference narrows it to a 10 m square. In short, an eight-digit grid reference designates a 10 meter square on the map.
